Stick iväg, Jack!
Historien om Radio Nordby Jan Kotschack ABOUT THE BOOK During 16 months, between 1961-62, Jack S. Kotschack's offshore station Radio Nord shook the Swedish establishement by broadcasting from international waters in the Baltic Sea. The station used the radio ship "Bon Jour" which later became the famous MV Mi Amigo, home of Radio Caroline South and many more radio stations. Radio Nord played modern pop music, news - and advertising, loved by the Swedish listeners. The book is richly illustrated in color with countless pictures, many of them previously unpublished! Despite the fact that it's written in the Swedish language, the book is definitely a must for all offshore radio enthusiasts. BONUS DVD The book's first edition comes with an unique DVD including a documentary film about Radio Nord, entitled "Låten från Båten" (Song from the Boat) - a fantastic time document of 8 minutes play time, which was shown as an opening film at the Swedish cinemas in autumn 1961. BOOK INFO # In Swedish # Hardcover with dust jacket # Richly illustrated in color # Format 169x239 # 424 pages # Incl. Bonus DVD # ISBN 978-91-89136-51-9 € 37.00
Radio Nord
& Radio Syd - Topplåtarna från 1961-1962 |
In 2009, several books about
"offshore radio" have been published, but Nigel Harris's is definetely
the most personal one of them all. It covers many radio stations and
broadcasting vessels but some school stories, too. "Boarding school was
harsh, but the North Sea was worse" says Nigel, who began his career as
Stuart Russel on Radio Caroline's MV Mi Amigo in the mid seventies.
The comprehensive book (which includes several pictures from Nigel's childhood up to the period on the Peace ship) is on the time before and during his offshore days, not just Radio Caroline. However, it dwells on the Mi Amigo days a bit longer than the other ships. Featured are the Mi Amigo, the Cedarlea project in Scotland, Radio Paradise, the Ross Revenge and the Voice of Peace; there is plenty of pirate radio including countless in-depth stories on life on board the radio ships. We learn about different characters like Tony Allan, Peter Chicago, Samantha Dubois, Marc Jacobs, Herman de Graaff , Roger Mathews, Peter Philips, Captain Ernie Stevensen and last but not least Ronan O'Rahilly. And we get to know how difficult and complicated the entire Caroline family sometimes could be... In summary, I can only recommend Nigel's book. It is definitely a must for every offshore radio enthusiast. [Dr. Martin van der Ven] "Ships in troubled waters" can be ordered at the Radio Caroline webshop. |

Hallo! LV18 has been offered a huge grant to build a berth on Harwich Quay. However some local councillors want to spoil it for us. Here's a link to an online survey which is being carried out by Essex County Council - who are very much on the side of LV18. I hope you can find the time to fill it in. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2NG2FVD ECC are taking over the delivery of the Harwich Quayside Regeneration from Tendring District Council - thank the Lord! The old 'Masterpaln' has been overturned, by us and our intrepid subversives, which originally was put together by a few self-ordained people with political and personal agendas. (The lot who have been standing in the way of LV18 for 10 years). We even managed to get our man in at County in the last elections - knocking the Labour 'Fat Controller' off his perch. The whole 'underclass' of Harwich voted for our man along with wild anarchists, anoraks and loads of people like LV18's own Carlie who had never voted before. As a result we have proved that people power can bring back some democracy round here and displace these local despots who have had their own way for too long. But they are not happy. Their desperate need for 'power at any cost' was proved at the TDC council meeting a couple of weeks ago when, as witnessed by some of our trusty LV18 volunteers, the Labour / 'Tendring First' Opposition spitefully voted against the LV18 project. This was brought about by the fact that a husband and wife pair of councillors from the Administration group, who were all for our project, were unable to attend the meeting due to their 12 year old son, who has been suffering from cancer, taking a turn for the worse. The news that the Oppostion would have majority voting on the night was met by them with disgusting glee. The poor couple's son has subsequently passed away. I can't begin to tell you how we feel about these awful people. It's bad enough for them to ruin our LV18 project but the depths that these scum will stoop to is beyond reproach. Anyhow, maybe you and our loyal friends can fill in this form online. It might just save the project. We have until Tuesday 9th March to get our point across. Sorry it's such a tight deadline - it really means people having to do it sometime on Monday if possible. Just to help a bit...The main points we want to get across are: LV18 must go into a permanent berth on the Quay (it's planned berth) and not into Gas House Creek. We don't want to lose the Parking on the Quay. We don't want a Car Park in Gas House Creek - the land would be better used for boat-related activities as it's the only tiny piece of water fronted land left for the townsfolk of Harwich to gain access to the water with their boats. We DO want a Maritime Museum on the Quay - preferably in one of the redundant Trinity House buildings. We don't want the Regeneration to be 'Housing Led' ie blocks of poncy high rise flats along the Quay. We do want to see Maritime related activities/buildings on the Quay - possibly the rebuilding of the Ha'penny Pier to it's original 1924 length (a long arm burnt down) to accommodate visiting historic wooden boats / classic boat festival. Hundreds of Thames Barges were built over the years in Gas House Creek - build a classic wooden boat Yard and encourage some traditional skills / apprenticeships. The 'Mayflower' project is along way off (if at all) Some say it had very little to do with Harwich apart from the Master, Christopher Jones, coming from Harwich. FACT: The Labour Oppostion have stated they want to see the 'Mayflower' in the LV18 Berth and not LV18. Just a few pointers - sorry to bang on but, if we lose the LV18 to these dictators it will be a sad day after all the hard work we've done over 10 years If we win through - and I'm still confident we will - it will be a great triumph of freedom of the individual. And what a party we will all have - bagsy me first blow on the Foghorn! Thanks to everybody who took the time to write in etc, so far. Ironically, we got our Planning Permission passed. There were 88 written letters of support sent - and 1 objection, from the Pier Hotel! Please circulate this urgently to as many people who might help us. Even 'Twitter' it - if you know how to do it! I don't! Cheers, Tony LV18, Harwich |

| It’s with great sadness to report the death of Dorothy Calvert on Sunday 21st February. Dorothy had long been unwell and recently decided to have a follow up operation for her heart condition, from which she didn’t recover. Dorothy very much behind Reg with the concept and supported him through the difficult times at Radio Sutch & City, task that was to prove bigger than even they’d anticipated. But the stations were unique, fresh, and daring picking up legions of followers throughout their time on air. After Reg’s death, Dorothy took over Radio City until forcibly closed by legislation in February 1967. We will be producing a tribute to Dorothy in our next update so please send your messages for inclusion. www.bobleroi.co.uk |

HANS KNOT
